Do not open the attachments of messages with a suspicious or unexpected subject.
If you want to open them,
first save them to your hard disk and scan them with an updated antivirus program.

Delete any chain e-mails or unwanted messages.
Do not forward them or reply to their senders.
This kind of messages is considered spam, because it is undesired and unsolicited and it overloads the Internet traffic.

  • .VB or .VCF or .VBE or .VBS

  • .WSC or .WSH or .WSF

VERY SAFE:
  • Pictures – GIF, JPG, BMP -usually OK
  • Movies - AVI, MPG, MOV, MP3 – usually OK
  • RTF – usually OK – can contain imbedded Macro viruses,
    open in Word Viewer
  •  
  • ZIP – compressed files are not dangerous in themselves, but could be
    containers for other files that may be infected -- so be VERY CAREFUL
    when opening the files within ZIP files.

  • SCAN THESE:

  • DOC, DOT- frequently contain Macro viruses, open only in
    Word Viewer
  • HTM or HTML- be wary these could contain script viruses
  • EML - Email previously saved by Microsoft Outlook
    - could contain viral code
  • XLS, XLT- could contain Macro viruses, open only in Excel Viewer
  • PPS- Powerpoint Presentation, usually OK, open with Powerpoint Viewer
